The State Hermitage is one of the largest museums of the world was found in 1764 by Catherine the Great, and opened its doors to the visitors in 1852. Since then it became one of the largest museums of the world with its 3 million items of a collection, and possesses the biggest collection of paintings in the world. This pressures collection is housed in total of six historical buildings, main of which is the Winter Palace, former residence of Russian emperors. Parts of the museum are also Menshikov Palace, Museum of Porcelain, Storage Facility and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building. Out of six buildings of the main complex of the museum only four are partially open to public – Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage and New Hermitage. The left two are Hermitage Theatre and Reserve House. There are also several of exhibition centres of the museum abroad. The Hermitage is a federal property.
